Manufactured under licence from Canadian company Clean Seed Technologies, the MAXSEEDER represents a further step in Mahindra’s strategy to expand its farm machinery portfolio beyond tractors, with particular emphasis on precision agriculture and sustainable crop production.

The machine is being produced at Mahindra’s dedicated farm machinery manufacturing facility in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, India. Commercial distribution will initially focus on Punjab and Haryana, two major agricultural regions where crop residue management and the reduction of stubble burning remain significant challenges.

Precision seeding without soil tillage

One of the MAXSEEDER’s main features is its ability to sow directly into fields containing substantial quantities of crop residue, without requiring conventional soil preparation. The machine has been developed for a wide range of crops, including rice, wheat, soybean, maize and cotton, making it suitable for different farming systems and crop rotations.

Its zero-till technology allows seeds to be placed directly into the soil while leaving most of the surface undisturbed. This approach reduces the need for preliminary cultivation operations, potentially lowering fuel consumption, labour requirements and operating costs. The ability to work in fields containing heavy rice straw residues is particularly relevant in northern India, where burning crop residues has traditionally been used to prepare fields for subsequent sowing.

According to Mahindra, field trials conducted in Punjab and Haryana demonstrated the MAXSEEDER’s ability to operate effectively in these conditions, providing an alternative to residue burning while maintaining accurate seed placement. The manufacturer also highlights potential benefits in terms of water conservation, reduced fertiliser consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Five independent planting units and adjustable row spacing

From a technical perspective, the MAXSEEDER has been engineered to offer considerable flexibility across different crops and planting configurations.

The machine features five independent planting row units, with adjustable row spacing and multiple metering configurations. This allows operators to adapt the seeding pattern to the agronomic requirements of individual crops and different field conditions.

The combination of independent planting units and flexible product delivery systems is designed to ensure accurate seed placement while improving equipment utilisation throughout the farming season. By allowing the same machine to handle different crops and planting patterns, Mahindra aims to reduce the need for specialised equipment and make precision seeding technology more accessible to farmers.

Electronic control of seeds and fertilisers

Another important feature is the integration of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), responsible for managing the metering and distribution of seeds and fertilisers. The system controls the application of seed, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea according to field requirements. Operators can manage the electronic functions through a dedicated smartphone application.

This electronically controlled distribution system is intended to improve application accuracy, minimise seed wastage and optimise fertiliser use. Particular attention has also been paid to nutrient placement. The MAXSEEDER incorporates a multifunctional tine designed to position urea approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm) below the seed line.

By placing fertiliser at a defined depth relative to the seed, the system aims to improve nutrient availability during crop establishment while limiting unnecessary fertiliser consumption. According to Mahindra, this combination of precise seed metering and controlled nutrient placement can contribute to more uniform crop establishment and improved input-use efficiency.

Designed for tractors from 35 hp

Unlike precision seeding equipment requiring relatively high tractor power, the MAXSEEDER has been developed to operate with smaller agricultural tractors. The trailed machine can be used with tractors rated at 35 hp or above, a characteristic that could significantly expand its potential customer base, particularly among small and medium-sized farming operations.

This relatively low power requirement is an important aspect of the machine’s design, as it allows farmers to adopt precision seeding technology without necessarily investing in larger tractors. The zero-till configuration also reduces the number of field operations required before planting, helping farmers complete sowing within increasingly critical seasonal windows.

Mahindra emphasises that the combination of reduced soil preparation, accurate input placement and operational flexibility is intended to improve overall field productivity while containing operating costs.

A partnership between Mahindra and Clean Seed Technologies

The MAXSEEDER is the result of a technology licensing agreement between Mahindra and Clean Seed Technologies, combining the Canadian company’s patented precision seeding technology with Mahindra’s manufacturing and distribution capabilities. The machine is based on technology developed by Clean Seed, whose SMART Seeder MINI-MAX platform is now entering commercial production through the Indian manufacturer.

Veejay Nakra, President of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Business, described the launch as an important milestone in the partnership.

“Mahindra is proud to partner with Clean Seed to deliver sustainable, mechanisation solutions to farmers world over,” he stated, highlighting the combination of patented seeding technology and Mahindra’s industrial capabilities.

Graeme Lempriere, Chairman and CEO of Clean Seed Capital Group, also welcomed the start of production, describing it as the result of several years of technological development and cooperation between the two companies.

For both partners, the project is intended to support wider access to advanced seeding solutions in India and potentially in other international markets.

Initial rollout in Punjab and Haryana

Mahindra will introduce the MAXSEEDER through its Farm Equipment Business dealership network, starting in Punjab and Haryana before progressively expanding distribution to other Indian regions. The initial focus on these two states reflects the machine’s suitability for agricultural systems involving substantial crop residues, particularly rice-based rotations.

With commercial production now underway, the MAXSEEDER adds a new precision seeding solution to Mahindra’s agricultural machinery portfolio.

Its combination of zero-till operation, electronic seed and fertiliser management, multi-crop adaptability and compatibility with lower-horsepower tractors positions the machine as a potential option for farmers seeking to improve planting efficiency while reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
