Hellmann Worldwide Logistics opened a new warehouse location in Oelde, Westphalia, covering a total area of 18,000 m2, from where it will ensure production supplies to the world’s largest Claas plant in neighbouring Harsewinkel, Germany.

Initially, the warehousing company is occupying 9,000 m2 of warehouse space, with a further 9,000 m2 to follow later this year after completion of the second construction phase. This significant increase in capacity is Hellmann’s response to the continued growth of Claas, the internationally operating agricultural machinery manufacturer. Management representatives from Claas and Hellmann as well as representatives from the district of Oelde attended the opening ceremony of the new warehouse, which is one of the largest Hellmann locations in Germany.

From screw to drum gearbox

Hellmann rents the newly built procurement warehouse for components from India, Turkey and China exclusively for its long-standing customer Claas and ensures production supplies from there at the nearby main plant in Harsewinkel. In Oelde, components ranging from screws to 120 kg drum gearboxes for combine harvesters and forage harvesters are stored, packed, picked, sequenced for specific assemblies and shuttled to the production plant several times a day. The new location is characterised by state-of-the-art storage technology and its sustainable construction. For example, the logistics company operates a 9,000 m2 photovoltaic system on the hall roof to cover part of its energy needs.

“Hellmann has been an important and strategic partner in the area of our European land transports and our global air and sea freight for years,” explains Bastian Linnenbrink, Head of Supply Chain Management Claas Self-propelled Harvesters. “In autumn 2018, we were able to extend our cooperation to the area of contract logistics by commissioning the location in Oelde. In addition to the initial pure warehousing activities, the order spectrum has been expanded to include picking and sequencing scopes. Hellmann thus forms an important part of our supply chain and our direct production supply and we are pleased to be able to shape the growth together at the new location in Oelde accompanied by significant process improvements.”

Continue to grow

“Claas and Hellmann share a very special success story: Over the past ten years, we have continuously expanded our cooperation, meaning that today, in addition to contract logistics, we are also active in all other logistics areas for Claas. With the new warehouse, we will be able to sustainably build on this success in order to continue to grow together with Claas and, of course, to create and secure jobs in the region”, Volker Sauerborn, Chief Operating Officer Contract Logistics Hellmann Worldwide Logistics concludes.
