The new BiG Pack from Krone delivered an impressive performance in the field and in a comparison test. The new high-performance machines score on a plethora of innovations and prove to unprecedented levels of bale quality, operator convenience and longevity and low life cycle costs.
The new generation of Krone BiG Pack models which was launched last year, impress users with added operator comfort and excellent performance data. This was confirmed by customers who put the machines through their paces in the field and also in a comparison test that was carried out by Krone in a study project.
In this project, a new fifth-generation BiG Pack 1270 and a predecessor model harvested wheat straw in parallel in a 9 ha field. Both machines were pulled by identical tractor models.
Although the findings are only a snapshot, they do allow essential conclusions to be drawn. Testing for maximum throughput, the new BiG Pack achieved a nominal throughput of 53.5 t/h while delivering a 13% higher bale density (kg/m³). Under the given conditions, this performance reflects a 20% performance boost over the previous version. The new generation also delivered in terms of maximum bale density. While managing a 4.7% higher throughput (t/h), the baler achieved a 15% higher density, which is attributed not only to the 80cm longer baling chamber.
Practical Comfort features
Along with this performance, the test drivers also appreciated the convenient handling which makes work much easier. For example, pre-compression by the Variable Filling System (VFS) can now be controlled from the cab and the standard torque measurement and load indicator fitted as standard allow even inexperienced drivers to achieve even higher daily outputs. Logging daily outputs is much easier now thanks to the Krone SmartConnect (KSC) system, a standard feature, and the use of Krone SmartTelematics. An ingenious lighting concept offers additional LED work lights and additional LED maintenance lights to ensure maximum efficiency during long working days. Furthermore, small details such deselectable pusher dogs with auto function and a chute that is folded out with a touch of button save valuable time when changing fields.
Keeping environment clean
Another valuable innovation was found to be the new PowerClean system which keeps not only the knotter bay clean but also the areas underneath the side panels. Hydraulic turbines in the knotter bay generate an overpressure in the knotter bay that prevents debris from collecting here in the first place. From here the air flow is channeled downwards to the areas underneath the panels and to the axle. This technology consigns any build-up of debris in the machine and also in the bale chamber to the past – to the positive effect of extending knotter life as the knotters operate in a clean environment now.
Further pluses were awarded to the twine boxes which are now integrated in the side panels where they are perfectly protected from dust and debris. As another advantage, the twine boxes swing up and down hydraulically for convenient refills and cleanings, accommodating 15 kg twine balls.
