Pirelli and Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening their presence in India’s rapidly expanding automotive tyre market. The agreement combines Pirelli’s expertise in premium tyre technology with BKT’s manufacturing capabilities and established industrial presence in India, opening new opportunities for both companies in domestic and international markets.
igned on October 22, 2026, the agreement represents a significant step in BKT’s diversification strategy, as the Indian manufacturer, widely recognized for its agricultural, industrial and off-highway tyres, moves further into the passenger car tyre segment.
Initial Production Target of 800,000 Tyres by 2030
Under the first phase of the partnership, BKT will manufacture up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded passenger car tyres by 2030 at one of its newly constructed production facilities in India.
Production will follow Pirelli’s specific technological requirements and quality standards, combining the Italian company’s expertise in high-performance tyres with BKT’s manufacturing infrastructure and local market knowledge.
The arrangement will operate through an off-take agreement, allowing Pirelli to establish a stronger industrial foothold in India, where it currently maintains only a commercial presence.
For BKT, the collaboration provides an opportunity to enter a new market segment while leveraging its existing manufacturing experience and international distribution capabilities.
A Joint Venture for Premium Tyre Manufacturing
The agreement also outlines a potential second phase involving the establishment of a 50-50 joint venture between Pirelli and BKT.
Subject to certain conditions, the two companies plan to develop a dedicated manufacturing facility for High Value passenger car tyres, producing products under both the Pirelli and BKT brands.
The new facility would serve not only the Indian automotive market but also selected international markets, further expanding the global reach of the partnership.
The initiative comes at a time when India is emerging as one of the world’s most promising automotive markets. Passenger car registrations are expected to grow by approximately 5-7% annually between 2025 and 2030, while demand for premium car tyres is projected to increase almost fivefold over the same period.
These trends are creating significant opportunities for manufacturers capable of combining advanced technology, competitive production capabilities and strong market positioning.

Complementary Strengths and Global Ambitions
For Pirelli, the agreement supports its strategy of focusing on the premium and High Value tyre segments while expanding its presence in markets with substantial growth potential.
For BKT, traditionally associated with specialist tyres for agriculture, construction, earthmoving and other off-highway applications, the partnership represents an important step towards diversifying its product portfolio and entering the passenger car market.
Marco Tronchetti Provera, Executive Chairman of Pirelli, emphasized India’s growing importance in the global automotive industry, highlighting the country’s expanding market, technological development and increasingly sophisticated industrial capabilities.
Andrea Casaluci, CEO of Pirelli, also pointed to the complementary strengths of the two companies, describing the partnership as an opportunity to support the increasing demand for premium tyres in India.
Arvind Poddar, Chairman and Managing Director of BKT, stressed that the agreement brings together complementary capabilities to capitalize on market growth and create long-term value for both companies.
Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director of BKT, highlighted the significance of the collaboration for the Indian manufacturer, noting that Pirelli’s decision to partner with BKT reflects the industrial expertise, manufacturing quality and technological capabilities developed by the company over several decades.
A New Chapter in BKT’s Industrial Development
The agreement marks a significant development in BKT’s industrial strategy. Having established a strong international reputation in the off-highway tyre sector, particularly in agricultural applications, the company is now preparing to extend its manufacturing expertise into the premium passenger car market.
By combining BKT’s industrial scale with Pirelli’s technological know-how and brand positioning, the partnership could provide a platform for further expansion in one of the fastest-growing automotive markets worldwide.
While the initial production agreement establishes a concrete target for 2030, the proposed joint venture could eventually transform the collaboration into a broader industrial partnership, strengthening both companies’ positions in India and beyond.
