In the category Product Design, the Steyr Terrus CVT, Massey Ferguson S5 and Valtra N, have won the well-respected German Red Dot 2022 design award.
“In search of good design” – the Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. The Red Dot Label has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after marks of quality for good design. In order to appraise the diversity in this field in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into three disciplines: “Brands & Communication Design”, “Design Concept” and “Product Design”. Competitions for each of these disciplines are held once every year. The international design jury that judges the entries assessed a record number of products from firms and design studios for the 2022 awards, in an evaluation process lasting several days. Entries from companies across the world were scrutinised, and assessments made of design quality and degree of innovation.
The award Product Design sets out to find the year’s best products. The products selected by the Red Dot Jury to win an award may be aesthetically appealing, functional, smart or innovative, but what they all have in common is their outstanding design. In this category “Product Design”, the three tractors have won the desired award.
Winners will feature in the next edition of the Red Dot Design Yearbook, and be presented in the winners’ area of the www.red-dot.org website. The awards will be given at a ceremony in Essen, Germany, on 20 June.
Steyr Terrus CVT
The Steyr Terrus CVT, the flagship tractor range that was subject to significant revision when the model’s second generation was launched in 2021, has received the international design award that recognises the contribution of key styling features to its capabilities, comfort and efficiency.
“Our aim was to take the style and form beyond the look. There’s evidence of this all through the cabin, where we created a new ergonomic environment for the operator, featuring greater comfort, space and quality. The all-new Multicontroller III armrest is a prime example, with rethought form and function. It is customisable to operator preferences or application requirements, making operation more intuitive, more enjoyable, and ultimately more productive.
“But the design challenges we set ourselves began even before the point the driver actually takes a seat. We sought to create a wide and welcoming entrance area, with steps that form a staircase to greet the operator when approaching the working office. In the cabin itself, we integrated a comfortable passenger seat that also serves as a mobile office table. And once in the seat, we wanted the driver to have easy access to a range of useful integral storage, including a cooled storage compartment. These small details of practicality were formed into part of the overall interior style.
“Systems that manage tractor and implement data were also a key part of the design. Data can be recorded instantly and automatically, and are accessible on the farm PC via the MySTEYR.com web portal, or the S-Fleet mobile app on the manager/owner’s smart device. It’s also possible to see the location of machines and monitor performance indicators. Two-way data transfer means data and instructions such as field maps can also be sent to the tractor from a smart device or PC.
“The design team behind the new Steyr Terrus CVT is delighted with the Red Dot jury’s recognition of our commitment to blending style and design with quality, capability, efficiency and sustainability. It’s fitting that STEYR, which has a reputation for style that matches the one it has for quality, should be the recipient of such an award with the new Terrus CVT.”
Massey Ferguson 5S
Another winner of the 2022 Product Design award is the Massey Ferguson 5S. The jury professionals from across the world, assessed the MF 5S in terms of its design quality and degree of innovation and it follows the MF 8S receiving the same respected award in 2021. “The ‘Red Dot’ is the award for high quality design. To emerge victorious from such a strong group of participants is testimony to the extraordinary quality of the product,” said the Award’s judges.
“We are honoured to receive this Red Dot Award,” says Thierry Lhotte, Vice President & Managing Director Massey Ferguson, Europe & Middle East. “Since its launch the MF 5S has quickly earned a superb reputation as an excellent dairy and livestock tractor. An ‘all-rounder’ – the MF 5S is designed and built to handle a wide range of tasks with ease and comfort.
“This award clearly shows its excellent design, with the narrowest steep-nose bonnet delivering outstanding visibility. It offers a 4m turning radius and many other practical features for unrivalled versatility,” he adds.
“The MF 5S truly is ‘Born to Farm’. It is the worthy successor to an iconic family of steep-nosed tractors – dating back to the famous MF 3000 from 1993.
Winning the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design 2022 shows how Massey Ferguson is setting the standard in this important segment”, continues Jérôme Aubrion, Director Marketing Massey Ferguson, Europe & Middle East.
“The MF 5S blends the compact dimensions required by livestock and mixed farmers together with its performance and ease of use for arable operations. A true multi-purpose workhorse, the range offers the right choice of power and specifications to suit all applications. These modern tractors also deliver straightforward operation and enhanced features with low ownership costs,” he concludes.
Valtra N
Third Product Design award winner is the 5th generation Valtra N Series. It continues Valtra’s success in the Red Dot design competition over the past decades.
The Red Dot Award won by the Valtra N Series is a demonstration of the principle of continuous development, in which new features that enhance everyday use for the customer have been introduced on an existing good product. For example, the new digital display on the A-pillar provides a completely new user experience compared to the previous controls. The position and visibility of the new display is optimal when working, and setting up the tractor is now very easy and intuitive, even on the basic model. The new N Series tractors are also packed with improvements that enhance safety such as the new LED daytime running lights. These are visible from afar, attract the attention of others even in bright conditions, and also help reduce energy consumption compared to traditional solutions.
The 5th generation N Series was unveiled in 2021 and it was designed based on the award-winning fourth generation and by incorporating customer feedback to further improve the N Series.
“Our new generation tractors have been designed to offer the customer the best possible tractor experience. The tractor should not only look good, but it must also serve in a range of applications. We have received positive feedback from our customers, many describing the tractor as very comfortable and easy to use especially in terms of smart farming technology”, says Kimmo Wihinen, Department Lead, Industrial Design & User Experience.
“The Red Dot competition is a prestigious design competition in the world. Winning the award is recognised as a mark of excellent design and user experience excellence at an international level. In addition to design and aesthetics, the evaluation criteria also include functionality, intelligence, and innovation.”
